The vampire story picks back up here, and this time Devan had to decide where it actually ends up. "Would they go their separate ways, would they reconcile, would they immediately try to kill each other again. I had decided reconciliation was the way I wanted to go" — but reconciliation between two beings who destroyed each other once already needs more than a change of heart to be believable.

The solution was to make the album's own back catalogue the evidence. "I tied in references to Alexander the Great, the Lyres of Byzantium and all of these other events mentioned in previous songs in both DOA and earlier in Cosmos. That history of witnessing humanity's evolution was the anchor in the vampires' reconciliation." It's right there in the second verse: "I was there when Alexander wept / No worlds left to claim / We watched the lyres of Byzantium burn / And Berlin do the same." The callbacks aren't fan service — they're the argument. Two people who've watched every empire fall and rebuild have earned the right to stop repeating their own smaller collapse.

The reconciliation itself isn't new information by the time this song arrives — it's foreshadowed all the way back in The Waking, which ends with the Maker declaring "We are older than the choice / We are finally free." After Everything is the album making good on that early, almost-thrown-away moment of peace, giving it the space and the history it needs to actually be believed rather than just stated.

The song was originally going to resolve. It doesn't. The final lines dissolve into fragments — "And closer now than— / Closer then— / After everything— / The distance— / —" — landing on a dash instead of a period. That was a late, deliberate change from a comparative "closer than" to a temporal "closer then," shifting the line from a comparison to a moment in time — and then refusing to close the sentence at all. The suspended almost-kiss ending does more work unresolved than a clean resolution would have.

The reconciliation itself isn't actually a surprise by the time it arrives — it was already foreshadowed four tracks earlier, in The Waking's own bridge: "But this is not that world / This is not that fire / She is not what I tried to make her be / And I am not the man who tried to take her / We are older than the choice / We are finally free." That's the Maker talking himself toward exactly the conclusion After Everything eventually reaches, well before either of them acts on it. The album plants the resolution early and spends the distance between the two songs earning the right to actually deliver it.
